David Hockney: Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm
Coinciding with the big David Hockney retrospective in 2012, the Royal Academy of Arts reprinted the etchings for the first time since its original publication in 1969. I was commissioned to design a new edition of the book. What a lovely thing: to start a project by reading fairy tales.
The book has now been reprinted a few times and the editions have enjoyed a range of colourful bindings, the green version celebrating the recent opening of Hockney’s exhibition at the RA David Hockney: The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020
‘The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm according to David Hockney are like no other version you will have read before. Although inspired by earlier illustrators of the tales, from Arthur Rackham to Edmund Dulac, Hockney’s extraordinary etchings re-imagine these strange and supernatural stories for a modern audience, capturing their distinctive atmosphere in a style that is recognisably the artist’s own.’ (RA 2012)
