Brave New World

Illustrating Aldous Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’ was the task for the Folio Society competition: a chance to reread the book (a bit creepier than I remembered) and improve on my handwriting and calligraphy.

As an inspiration for the illustrations I found a wealth of rather odd catch phrases from the first chapter on – setting the scene in the so called ‘hatcheries’ – almost like a murmur in the background of every scene, subconsciously planting state-approved propaganda in heads and hearts. I had a lot of fun writing these phrases again and again… almost a brainwashing experience.
